Dear Carolina Students, Faculty and Staff,
Our campus community has lost someone we love and cherish, our friend and colleague Eve Carson. We are all in a state of shock. Eve was taken from us suddenly in a terrible act of violence. None of us understands why these kinds of events occur.
We are all hurting. And we want you to know that help is available.
We encourage students, faculty or staff who feel they need assistance to contact the Office of the Dean of Students (966-4042) or Counseling and Wellness Services (966-3658 or the after-hours number 966-2281). Counselors are available at the Upendo Lounge at the Student Academic Services Building and Room 2518 A/B in the new addition at the Carolina Union until 11 p.m. this evening (Thursday, March 6, 2008). Resident advisors in campus housing and Granville Towers are also available to be of assistance and support. We also want to reach out to those of you who live off campus. Please do not hesitate to call us and let us know how we can help you.
Counseling services will remain available for the remainder of this week and throughout spring break next week.
I know that many of you are concerned about safety. It's important to know that there is no indication that there is any link between this crime and the security of our campus. Chapel Hill police are responsible for the investigation, and our campus police department has pledged its assistance.
University police want to remind everyone about the following safety tips:
Don't walk alone at night. Use the buddy system. Walk in well-lit areas of campus.
Immediately report any and all suspicious activity by calling 911. Remember that 911 isn't just for emergencies.
If you don't have a cell phone, use the emergency call boxes located across campus. Push the button to automatically alert police where you are. Police will respond immediately.
More information about campus safety and resources for our community can be found at alertcarolina.unc.edu.
We can all expect the news media to continue to have a high level of interest in reporting about Eve and the University's response to this tragedy. Please do not feel obligated to speak to reporters if you are not comfortable doing so. If you have questions or need assistance in handling a request from a reporter, please feel free to contact the University's media relations office at 962-2091 or news@unc.edu.
For those of you who wish to send a note of condolence, you may do so by clicking on the link about Eve on the University's home page.
We will hold a memorial service for Eve after spring break. We will send you more information about that as the plans develop.
Sincerely,

James Moeser
