Dear Carolina Parents,
I am so sorry to tell you that today Chapel Hill police identified the victim of an off-campus shooting as Eve Carson, a Carolina senior, student body president and trustee. We are deeply saddened and numb with grief.
Let me first emphasize that we do everything we can to ensure that this is a safe campus and community. There is no indication that there is any link between this crime and the security of the campus. Chapel Hill police are responsible for the investigation and our campus police department has pledged its assistance. We are still operating with limited information but I would like to share what we know now.
At approximately 5 a.m. yesterday (Wednesday, March 5), Chapel Hill police responded to reported gunshots in a residential neighborhood off campus. They found a deceased, unidentified female victim. The Chapel Hill police alerted the community, including the campus, and requested assistance in identifying the victim. The University promptly notified the campus about the crime and the police department’s appeal for help.
This morning, University officials received official notification from Chapel Hill police that the victim was Eve. I have spoken with Ms. Carson’s parents to offer our condolences and help, and I have met with the student government cabinet and some of Eve’s closest friends. A campus-wide notification was sent out at 12:40 p.m.
I called the campus community together this afternoon at 3 p.m. to mark this terrible tragedy. We will plan a full memorial service at a later time after Spring Break.
We have arranged counseling services for all students, whether living on or off campus, through Counseling and Wellness Services at various locations on campus. Resident advisors in campus housing and Granville Towers are also available to be of assistance and support. Counseling services will remain available for the remainder of this week and throughout Spring Break next week.
Please join us in remembering Eve’s parents, family and friends in your thoughts and prayers.
Sincerely,

James Moeser
